GREEN is the new Black!
Green smoothies, that is. Smoothies are all the rage these days. And justifiably so.
Why? They are one of the most simple and quick (not to mention tasty!) means to up your intake of easily digestible nutrients – including vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fiber. Here’s a quick overview including all the info you need to know to become a smoothie master in a hurry.
These plant-based wonder drinks provide so many health benefits, including: Aid in digestion Boost energy level Assist with weight loss Eliminate cravings Glowing Skin Cleansing and alkalizing Fight disease Combat environmental toxins Kid-friendly
What goes into a smoothie? Here are some suggested components:
Fruit (any fruit can go into smoothies – freeze for a cool creaminess)
Greens (kale, spinach, chard, romaine, parsley, cilantro) Liquids (nut milks, purified water, fresh squeezed juice, coconut water, herbal tea) Protein (kefir, silken tofu, nuts, nut butters, seeds) Healthy Fats (nuts, avocado, coconut oil) Extra enhancers (i.e.: superfoods, herbs, spices)
How – tips to build a tasty smoothie:
Use a ratio of 60% fruit to 40% greens Support your local farmer. Local, fresh ingredients offer better nutrition. Go organic to increase nutrient density. Plus – do you really need to eat pesticides? I don’t think so! Use the Environmental Working Group’s “Clean 15/Dirty Dozen” document to know when organic is a must and when settling for conventional produce is okay. Switch things up! Try using herbal tea as your liquid base, or try adding dates for a creamy sweet taste. Don’t forget about the extras that really pack a nutritional punch; maca for energy, spirulina for its powerful anti-inflammatory properties, aloe vera for detoxification, goji berries for healthy glowing skin, protection of the eyes and vitamin C, acai for the immune system and a boost of energy and – my favorite – cacao for antioxidants and a great chocolate flavor.
